I'm in need of a new filter, however I don't know enough about them for comparison. I was going to stick with Fluval 305 for a 40 Gallon Breeder that's going to be kept about 3/4 full, but honestly is this simply the better deal even though is actually more than I need? Is the Fluval adequate?

See this thread for filter sizings. The 305 on a 40G with about 25-30 gallons in it should be just fine.

The fluval FX5 is an excellent filter and will be able to handle whatever size tank (up to about 150 gallons) your adult sized turtle needs.

No problem. You should write a book...or at least a long pdf. I was reading a thread in which you were offering advice to someone (not mentioning names) and I could "see" you pulling your hair out a bit. I understand its often difficult to express your intentions/feelings in a quick post, but I see your passion. Keep it up man. Since you're here, can I ask you what larger sized tank has the same footprint as a 40 Breeder...because that will be the last tank that I buy (I'm leaving it up to the kids after that), and i'm still debating on a filter. I do understand that the Fluval 305 will only be adequate for the proportions noted above, however when I do get that larger tank I will need a larger filter. So, since money is tight (my wife wont let me spend $200 for an ebay fx5) would a 405 (40 turtle gallons, $140 on ebay, which I may be able to get away with buying) be sufficient for whatever that larger footprinted tank is? Does Fluval have anything good between the 405 and the fx5, or should I just suck it up and lie about the price of the fx5? I'm going to stick with Fluval, btw.

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately the 40 breeder is a 36" tank. There really isn't a larger tank with the same footprint. 75 and 90 gallon tanks are 48" tanks, 120 and 150 are 6 foot tanks and bigger than that are 8 foot tanks.

There's nothing in the fluval line between a 405 and a FX5. The 405 is $140-ish, the FX5 can be found for $180-$200. So in terms of price, there isn't a huge gap. In terms of filtration ability the FX5 eats the 405 for breakfast.

If you'd like to save a few $$, take a look at the Rena XP4. It's a solid filter and will give you a clean turtle environment up to about 100 gallons. Again, the XP4 is AROUND 170. The FX5 is $180-200. I have both. You can put the XP4 inside the FX5. When the FX5 is done having it's 405 breakfast, it went and had the XP4 for lunch.

As for PDF's maybe you didn't see the link I forgot to post... Check this thread out it has the adjusted turtle appropriate sizings and how to set the filters up... viewtopic.php?f=9&t=30145

I had already found the link, however, I was referring to an ebook versus writing a book! Thanks for your help man and I'll take a look at the xp4!

Just another note...I haven't been able to find the xp4 for much less ($10) than I found the fx5 for. Since my budget has restrictions, I'm going to go with the 405 and upgrade the filter when I upgrade the tank.

It looks legit. For a 40 gallon on a tight budget, get one of those cheap Chinese canisters on ebay.

Steve, sounds like you have some underlying concern. Is the listing for a Chinese knockoff? That was just one random listing out of many. Just curious because the only thing worse for me than buying a $140 filter, is buying one that explodes when I put it in the tank and having to explain it all to the wife and kids. :o

The one in the link appears to be legit. The knockoffs I refer to have similar case designs to well-known canisters. They seem to be decent for their reviews :)

Hmmm...not that I would want one...but if you happen to stumble upon a link, fell free to pm it to me. For the record, I am committed to getting the 405/406. The link would be purely for educational purposes. :D
