XP L $103.59
XP XL $130.39

*note on the new name/design from a reviewer:

The XP-L is an upgraded version of the old XP-3. It still provides excellent filtration, although API have modified their output system. With the old XP-3, Rena/API provided both a spray bar and a jet nozzle for optional output preferences. The new XP-L has done away with the spray bar, and the jet nozzle has been replaced with a "goose neck" output nozzle.

Yes! I may skip buying my back up HOT and go ahead and get my canister. Do you think the xp-L will be fine for a 55g tank. I've never dealt with canisters but they have to be kept below the tank right?

Yes, I use the xp-l (formerly the xp3) for my 55g tank. They perform better if they are below the tank. Keep in mind that I've heard that Rena no longer supplies a spray bar. Since I keep my water level around 75% of the tank I had to lengthen my intake and outtakes with pvc pipe.
