His plastron is becoming pure amazing. the Black patches are being replaced by these circles, with fine outlining. I think it looks super cool, I like it!

He has two lucky horse shoes, a pair of wings and a few donuts!!!! Now to get a bit creepy. I was a Flight Engineer on the mighty Boeing Chinook, got my wings. I have a Clydesdale horse shoe, I got from one of my units when I was in the Army (we were the Clydesdales of B Co. 2/4th GSAB), a chinook helicopter company in 4th Combat Aviation Brigade. And, I love hot, fresh baked donuts! How's that for your pet being like you!? What a lucky turtle, so cool!

Very awesome info. If he's like most RES, it'll be very large brown/black splotches eventually. Kinda sucks though, those patterns are unique as fingerprints.

Steve this is the cool part, the blotches are being replaced by the fine lined patterns:) If this persist the black blotches will disappear and leave just these patterns

Her a comparison for you Steve and everyone else, for that matter. This will show the disapperance of the black blotches.

I'm gonna start paying better attention to the patterns and will document them in a shorter interval to get a better comparison and clearer pics. I have a feeling when he has his next full shed the blotches will go with the old scutes. I'm interseted in the carapace as well, although I'm waiting for him to have a good shed first to see how the carapace will turn out. The patterns seem to have become a bit more noticeable on the carapace, as well.

The ones from last summer might look a little dull if he's getting ready to shed... is that what happened?

Well it was darker before the shed, then dull, and after the shed the patterns were more defined.

Rio grande res keep this type of pattern throughout their life, as well as their zipper like pattern down their vertebral scutes. Its beyond me how they are not a subspecies yet, they really are very different from regular res.

Yep I know, it is puzzling to me too. That's why I got a Rio. I wanted a turtle with patterns and not become dark.
