Meet Bobo! (warning, pic heavy...)

My boyfriend rescued Bobo from a family that had her and her brother for three years. One day, her brother disappeared from their outside pond and, after a few months of having her inside in a glass bowl, that family decided they couldn't keep her anymore. I offered to take care of Bobo (of course she had another name then :) ) and the minute I saw her in the glass bowl she was brought in I fell in love with her! I even remember the day she came in - September 17th 2010. At the beginning, I didn't know anything about taking care of turtles, but after some research I found this wonderful site and hard work began... She was about 10 cm SCL (4 inches), and all I could give her at the time was a 15 gallon tank with a small filter, a heater, a puny basking area and a red plastic plant... but she seemed pretty happy with that!

But Bobo was growing and growing... long story short, two years and many improvements later, we decided to give her a (hopefully) permanent home, a 80 gallon glass tank with a big basking area outside the tank, a bigger heater, a resting area that we like to call "her bed" and an excellent canister filter. She still has the red plant, though, and still nibbles at it!

(The UVB bulb hadn't been installed yet...)

And just because I know how much you like pics, here are a few more of my little one - well, not so little anymore, she is now 20 cm (about 8 inches) long and weighs 1200 grams (42 oz)!

In my parents' garden, May 2nd, 2013 - she had just laid her first clutch, 4 eggs, near that little lavender bush by the fence

Thank you for the kind words! Steve, it means a lot coming from you. Hadn't it been for the many hours spent lurking around these pages, we couldn't have made it happen, that's for sure. :)

Yes, awesome job. I was looking at your pics, what are the plants with the bases in your tank and where did you get them?

Thanks!

I bought the red plant three years ago, and the green plant last spring, together with the rest of the stuff for the 80 gallon tank. The base is made of little rocks glued together, and as soon as I noticed she likes to bite and swallow them frantically, I asked my bf to cover it with silicone (she kind of attacked the red plant, especially if I turned on the light in the room at night :|). After a few successful attemps to bite and chew the silicone, she decided she didn't like it and finally left the plants alone.

I live in Romania, we don't have Petco or the other pet stores you guys mention, but in major cities we have a pretty decent pet shop, Zoomania, and that is where I bought these plants. I could help you by posting the links to the online shop (sorry, Romanian only):

The red plant - SYDECO AMAZONIA, height 22 cm - approximately 9 inches
http://www.zoomania.ro/index.php/pesti- ... 49617.html

The green plant - SYDECO ACORUS MAXI, height 50 cm - 20 inches
http://www.zoomania.ro/index.php/pesti- ... 50124.html

And here is Bobo this morning, she has just shed :msgreen:

Here's my girl basking yesterday

Image

I think she's developing eggs again, she's hungrier and basks extensively, just like she did last year. Can't feel anything yet, but soon...

Her shell seems to be looking better with every shed, and all this recent basking seems to lead to another shed in a few months. Is twice a year too much?
I also measured and weighed her, she hasn't grown since autumn, so I'm relieved, she's a big girl anyway and I can't have a bigger tank in this apartment...

Hope you enjoyed! :msgreen:

Such wonderful pictures! Glad you bumped the thread or I wouldn't have seen them. She looks wonderful. By the way, my husband is from Baia Mare, we live in NY but have visited multiple times :)
