How about a list of common tank infestors/invaders with pictures? we get lots of questions about worms or snails, or other things in the tank, and we could have a list of traits and pics to help people ID them. We could also include algaes and bacteria that tend to cause visible problems. Yeah it's the microbiology dork speaking, but really! We do get lots of those questions.

what does the slider in red ear slider mean?

my guess is that it has something to do with the under part of their shell? for some reason thats what hits me.

Do I wash my hands after I touch it?

Why are the baby's green and adults darker colored?

Can I feed it ham and frogs?

Why does my turtle pee on me?

I forgot if the site already answered these questions, but oh well :P

My question - Where are the answers to the questions in this thread?

Seriously, I clicked FAQ above and it's all about how to register and post on message boards... I went to the main site, and I can find the care topics, but no FAQ.

There are questions in this thread that I need answers to. LOL

I've been assuming they are called slider because any time anybody walks by one, they slide off their basking log and into the water. But that's just my silly guess.

No, you're on target. That's a pretty common explanation as to why they're called sliders.

Is this an okay set up?

Is my turtle pooping normally?

How often do I feed vegetables/fruit?

How often do I feed protein?

Does protein cause pyramiding?

Do my turtles grow to fit the size of their tank?

Is it normal when my turtle puffs their throat/expands their throat?

If there was a big variation in questioning on the subject I just put the top 2 down on the same line. :)

-How fast should my RES be growing?

-Why isn't my RES eating/ eating properly?

-What substrate is best for an RES/ is sand ok?

-What is considered appropriate lighting/what's the proper ratio of UVA to UVB?

-Is my RES a boy or girl?

-Why is my RES digging so much? (male and female)

-Why is the water cloudy even though I just cleaned it?

-Can RES be let out of their aquariums?

-What is the approximate age of a RES when it's officially an adult?

-Why is Salmonela a problem with RES?

Oh and they're called "Sliders" because they're known for quickly pushing off and sliding into the water when basking if something startles them... In the wild, anyway. They don't go on land to bask. In Louisiana you always see them sitting on Cypress "knees" (Cypress tree roots that come up out of the water). I guess they're just strategic like that.

What type/how much of filtration should I aim for?
Is there such a thing as "too much filtration"?

Do turtles need other turtle friends?

How long does an average pet turtle live if properly taken care of?

Does my turtle really need a large tank/10gallons per inch of SCL?
