My hubby's family has turtle traps in the ponds at the farm to keep the turtles from eating all the stocked fish. I HATE having to remove the turtles but it's a requirement they have. I check the traps every day to see what new things have been caught before they are rehomed to another pond. I recently found this HUGE RES. I was shocked at how big it was. It's a good reminder to people just how large these turtles can grow...they don't stay little small hatchlings!!!

Are you sure it's a boy? The front nails look just as long as the back nails.

Very cool! The nails made me think male too, but the tail looks too small for a male, even with it tucked in. When my male tucks his tail in, the tip almost reaches his back toes.

I'd say she's one big, ol' gal :D

it amazes me how much the color changes in these guys. There is absolutely no red on this ones next that I can see.

For sure its a boy, that tail is way to thick and long. On female turtles the from body to cloaca its less then even half an inch. Looks like 1inch and half on that turtle.

Im sticking by male.

My male's claws are twice that and he's only 6", it's a girl and a pretty big one. Mine top out at 9", I'd love to see one that actually reached a foot.

shes lacking the red because she's old and turning melanistic.

I vote female due to the short snout and lack of cloaca pics :)

I also haven't seen a melanistic female like that before but she's a beauty!

I saw a RES about that big in the denver aquarium and it only had 3 legs.

I tried to get a picture but there was too much glare on the glass.
I have 4 baby RES. Their names are, Bob, Motzarella, Mr.Turtle, and Mrs. Turtle.
