My RES always squirms around when I'm holding him and petting his head. He becomes stiller when I scratch/pet his shell. I see people here with older turtles who sit on laps, etc. If I continue to socialize him, will he become friendlier when he's older?

I guess. Happened with my turtle. Maybe your turtle recognizes your touch. Many turtles loved getting their shells rubbed.

I think they get used to you but it also depends on their personality... some are just friendly while others aren't.

We have one really friendly turtle who even my kids can pick up without worry, but we have another one that I won't pick up without a stick and a box and gloves.

The really friendly ones are definitely the older ones. I think they just get used to people.

WOAH! A stick, a box, and gloves. Yikes! Does the one the kids can handle enjoy being picked up, or does s/he just tolerate it? What was that turtle like when it was younger?
