Spiny Softshell Turtle

Hi all,

I'm thinking about stepping up and getting a softshell turtle. I like the appearance, and I'm aware of the size they get. That wont be a problem. I have space and a tank for the first few years. I'm planning on getting a hatchling, I know these cant be sexed, a male is half the size of the females, I prefer a male (more because of the color patterns being retained as an adult) which is a 50/50 chance, but a female wouldn't be a problem. My question is does anyone here have experience with the Spiny Softshell or any softshell? In particular, I'm looking for info on water depth for a hatchlingand adulthood, so on and so on. I have the heavy filteration and UV filteration covered. Lighting is covered along with heat. Just need water depth for a hatchling, oh I have two 5 lbs bags of sand still so that is covered too. Thanks in advance.

Hmmm, I don't recall anyone on this forum with a softie. I won't be surprised if there is a site dedicated to these guys.

that's a good call Steve i will look into that. I haven't come across one yet but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist. I will keep searching. I have found there isn't a lot of info about their care. Thanks for the input.

I got a surprise my wife got me a gift certificate from the reptile store here in Vegas for the price of the softies. I went over there this morning and picked out the spiny softshell I wanted. They still had him available so I'm super excited! I go home on Tuesday so they are gonna hold him for me:) I will be going home with a soft shell, so cool:) I will post pics soon!!!
