crazy little turtles

so
um
one of my turtles, upon approach, leaps off the rock after seeing a movement outside the tank or hearing a sound.
then, he will swim under the rock
is he scared of something? the other two are much bigger.
then as for my other two,
they will either bask for around 4 hours and only get in the water once every few hours, then come up a few minutes later -_-
my grandma turns off the light because of this, to let them 'cool down'
is basking for like a few hours straight good for a turtle or bad for its health
also, when the two of them arent in the water, they are constantly staring up at us like they have never ate.. they even stand on their feet(only to topple minutes later) and look at us with eyes full of sadness. my grandma feels like crying when she seems them like that so she gives them food.
this is begging for food right
