Sulcata Tortoises

African Spurred Tortoises (Geochelone sulcata) are among the most popular tortoise kept as pets. However, they are also the third largest tortoise in the world, troubling sulcata owners as their sulcata gets bigger and bigger. Be prepared for this tiny baby tortoise (gigantic soon enough) when you bring him home.

Here is a great website all about the sulcata tortoises. Sulcata Station
Be sure to read carefully and extend your research in books, other websites, and forums that will help you advance your knowledge about these beautiful tortoises.

I hope you don't mind me posting, but I wanted to point out that there's been many, many advances in Sulcata care since this thread was originally posted. One of these advances is discovering that hatchlings are best kept in hot and VERY humid conditions, a major contrast to the dry, "desert" conditions most care sheets still recommend (which is why you still hear about most sulcata hatchlings dying, most often of kidney/renal failure caused by chronic dehydration).

The best resource I know of for Sulcata hatchling care is actually a thread over at Tortoise Forum. See here: http://www.tortoiseforum.org/Thread-How-To-Raise-Sulcata-Hatchlings-and-Babies#axzz1DIkRC1bC

Sulcatas are a huge commitment, and deserve the best care you can give them from the start. I hope prospective and current Sullie keepers go to the trouble of researching and utilizing this new information, to better care for their torts!
No turtles yet!! 0.1 Corn snake, 1.0 San Diego Gopher Snake, 1.2 Bearded Dragons, 2 dogs, and a "mystery" (soon to be turtle) pond in the back yard!

Hi. I have a baby Sulcata and the guy I got it from recommended that I leave an infrared heat lamp on all night. Is this really necessary?

It would be best to ask this type of question to a forum or e-mail list dedicated to Sulcatas.
