What kind of tort do you wanna get? I agree with cory, a terrarium wont even be close to being big enough. If you have to keep it indoors, have you thought about maybe a tortoise table? They are real easy to build and for the price you will pay for a new, lets say a 55 gallon tank, you could build a 4'X8' tort table. I dont know the price of plywood in your area, but around my area in kentucky, its about 12-15 dollars for a 4'X8' sheet. You would need probabaly 3 sheets, some polyurathane paint is about 20 bucks for a gallon. The polyurethane paint makes it waterproof, and you could probably skip this step, because most torts dont like alot of humidity. Then if you had to you could buy some steel chicken wire to build a top with. So you get like 3 or 4 times the enclosure for the same or a little less money than a 55 gallon tank.

Why don't you find out what kind of turtle your friend is giving you and find some care sheets on it?

In your initial post, you said you were going to buy a tortoise...

Well most torts will be able to live outside with no problems. What is your climate like? Does it ever get cold? Its hard to give you advice, since you arent sure what kind of tort it is.
