I am pretty sure they are good swimmers, most others I have seen in captivity have half the tank water, the other half land. Always thought maylasians were quite hard to keep in captivity unless you really know what you are doing. Good luck with your new turtle.

Schedule 1 of the Indian Wildlife Protection Act doesn't just include animals that are completely endangered. It is illegal to pick up any animal from the wild and offer it for sale without a license to do so. Irrespective of what the law says, unless you are absolutely certain that the species you are interested in is captive bred, it is always advisable to avoid buying random species that you stumbled across. These may be wild caught, picked off from their natural habitat in large quantities and stashed into death bowls in a corner of the shop until a customer carries them home on a whim without knowing what they are getting into, their dietary requirements, the size they will grow to, their lifespan etc.
In the case of red eared sliders, they are ALWAYS captive bred specially for sale (in India). As such, they will be tamer, friendlier towards humans, and you won't affect the existing native population by bringing a healthy wild caught turtle home.
