They can be out of the water for long periods, days even. Most of the time when they require dry-docking, they are back into water once or twice a day for them to rehydrate and eat.

If the injury is only a flesh wound, usually dry docking is all that is required. However, if it does not look like it is scarring up to heal of it is spreading/looking infected, then you should be consulting a vet. A little bit of betadine/water should be ok... maybe use a cotton ball instead of toothbrush.

Hi there. So I started a treatment after speaking with an online specialist that I paid for. It seems I may need to take Pondra to a vet and there are very few exotic pet vets around me and none open again until Monday. In the meantime, I have her dry docked with both uva and uvb lighting. Put her in the water for about 30 mins every 12 hours and feed. The sores appear to be healing except for when she is in the water they become evident again but not as bad. Looking for a good local vet to help because I feel like I don't know if this is doing any good or not. I think I've watched 15 different homemade clips of how to cure shell rot, using those methods, cleaning, betadine and even once I put Neosporin. wish me luck, hoping she makes it.

btw, tysm for responding. Its just me being so inexperienced. I will say for the first day I had her out at your suggestion, she was very smelly. I couldn't stand it, made me sick and I couldn't eat thinking about her for over 24 hrs. I used the meds, poured it onto the wounds so I wasn't touchingit, just a few drops. She doesn't smell anymore so I guess in a way she seems to be healing. She goes under the towel I put in her tote and sleeps a lot.

I still haven't seen a clear, close-up picture so I still didn't see anything beyond some potential fungus. Fungus does appear more visible when wet, though it is not known to smell.
