hello! I just recently found this forumn and before that I had no idea how I wasn't caring for my(my son's) res's right. I just wanted to say thank you for this informative site! :D we bought two res turtles last september ( I will tell you they are under 4 inches) I had no idea about the law. anyway first they lived in an aquarium-till i broke it but i didnt have it set up right. then i put them in a small tupperware box well not to small but not big anyway i got a 29 gal. freshwater fish aquarium and started researching info about that and found this site. so i went and got them a 10 gal tank( for now) with floating dock,ect.. now they can swim swim swim and then i got some rosie reds and feeder guppies and ghost shrimp and oh my they ate almost all of them right then. before i was only feeding them reptomin. anyway's we are enjoying them now as before they were just a mess i had to deal with. they have not been in there new home but about a month and they are already shedding skin. i don't think they grew at all the first year. thanks to all! i do have a question, but i will post it elsewhere.

Welcome to the forum.... So glad you found the info you needed to make your turtles happy and healthy. They are meant to be enjoyed, aren't they? I know we enjoy Koopa and all his antics. :)

It's great that they are eating good, but remember that pellets are their staple along with a variety of veggie/plant matter. The other things mentioned are to be used vary sparingly as treats only (no more than once a month or so). They are too high in protein to give more than that. Foods high in protein will cause a lot of health problems down the road if given too much/too often. :)

Do you have the lights they need over their basking area? (UVB & UVA)

Post pics if you have any. We'd love to see them. :D

Hi and Welcome :)

I've had my turtles for a bit over a year too and learned a lot from this forum on the proper care for my turtles. I had been doing a lot of things wrong too and didn't get the full enjoyment out of them like I do now.

btw, it's not illegal to buy them under 4" it's illegal to SELL them under 4" :) I read something recently about how they can sell them as a hobby but not as a Pet... still haven't figured out what the difference is as far as turtles are concerned. :)

Again, Welcome.

Big thank you from me too. I've had my two turtles for 3 years and I've learned stacks from skimming through the forums.

Best bit - the pics posted of people's tanks - I have a new turtle habitat building project on my to do list now - cheers for the ideas!
