Hello everyone, I just wanted to say hello as I may be on here asking some questions. I have a close friend who acquired four painted turtles just over a year ago. She took it in stride and got them all set up with a proper habitat. She had to segregate one of the turtles as he is not behaving well with the others and she does not want to have the responsibility of keeping up two separate tanks. In the near future I will be bringing the one turtle to my home and I am spending my time beforehand reading up as much about him as possible and getting any supplies he needs that will not be coming with him. All that being said, I am very excited for my new friend!

Welcome to the forum! Is that turtle a male? That would be pretty good for you as male painteds stay pretty small and will require less space.

Thanks for the welcome! I was told he is male and he does appear to be. He is a bit over a year old and is indeed smaller than the three females that she has. That being said, I have learned through recent research that it can be difficult to sex them for a couple years.

If he's growing at a normal rate, you'll notice any physical change before 2 years... usually longer nails. A thicker tail and longer snout will help you confirm your findings.

That is good to know. Once I get him home, I will have greater opportunity to really evaluate his appearance and health. I will try to take the time to post a picture of him as well!
