They often allow me to come near without running and attempting to hide. And every once in a while they will allow me to pick them up. I keep them in my room in hopes that they will get used to my presence. Which seems to be working! 
I know I can't expect too much out of them since its not in their nature to trust larger creatures that grab at them but I thought they may like a little bit of interaction instead of sitting in that tank by themselves all day long.

By the end of the week I'm going to get a few plants and some kind of sand or something to go along the bottom as well. What else would you guys suggest I add in the near future?

the first thing i would suggest would be no sand or gravel of any kind at the bottom. your res can eat this and become very sick. get some large river rocks instead.
also, is your basking light uva/uvb? a res needs UVB light to stay healthy.
as far as suggesting anything else... maybe something he can hide in or behind... they like to do that.

Posted: Tue Jul 25, 2006 4:34 pmyeah mine love to hide...I'd recommend getting a decorative fake log with fake plants and holes in and around it for them to hide in. I bought one and they love it!

Those shouldn't be hard to pick up around here. hmmm, should I get live plants or fake? I guess fake would work better so I won't have to worry about the turtles eating them. Oh, and are there any kind of toys or something turtles like to play around with?

Also I know that this may not be my spot to say this but thank Jessica for mentioning that little "fish" rocks are not good to put in with your RES because I have little rocks in mine, I used to have bigger little rocks in my tank but I just moved recently and I thought that it would be good for a change for Stankass so I put in some little coloured rocks.
Just a quick question I am gonna change the rocks most likely tomorrow when I dig out the bigger rocks but what can happen to Stankass if she eats them?

Posted: Thu Jul 27, 2006 10:08 pmlildragon, if your turtle eats them and they become impacted and she can't pass them, it can lead to very serious health problems that could require surgery. There have been a couple of posts in the past about turtles dying from ingesting way too many rocks.
Posted: Fri Jul 28, 2006 12:20 pmIf your basking light is a UVB light, it isn't giving off much heat. If it's a basking light and giving off heat, it's not giving off UVB rays (I'm assuming you don't have a combination UVB/UVA mercury vapor light).
What brand of light is it?
What's the temp of the basking area?
(If you're using a regular UVB light, your turtle needs another light for a heat source).
