Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Master Oogway has been part of our house for a few months now. I first noticed the missing scute in his shell a few days ago. Any idea what it is?

How big is your turtle? He’s about 6” long on husband shell.
How long have you had it? About three months.

What is the water temperature? 78 degrees Fahrenheit
Did you use a thermometer? Yes.
Are you using a water heater? Yes.
How much water is in there? Around 35-37 gallons.
Are you using a water conditioner? Last week.
Are you using any filtration? Yes, a cartridge style rated for 80 gallons

What is the basking temperature? Around 90 degrees Fahrenheit
Is there a basking light? Yes.
Is there a basking platform that is easy to climb on? Yes.
What kind is it or what is it made out of? It’s a ramp style, don’t know what it’s made from.
Is there a UVB light? Yes.

What have you been trying to feed it? Food pellets with dehydrated meal worms and shrimp.
When was the last time your turtle ate? Last night. He gets a little less than a teaspoon per night and clamors for more.

How big is the tank/pond/enclosure? 40 gallons.
Is the tank near a window? Sort of. It’s in between two windows.
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity? Yes.

Have you read the Basic Care section? Yes.
Have you searched the forums for similar situations? Yes.

Is there any other unusual activity/symptoms? None so far.

Hi Joshua, any pics of the scute area? If its a piece he shed, then a normal one will look thin and translucent. @ 6 inches, Master Oogway is likely female.

Here's a pick of the shed scute. I was pretty sure he's a male due to the really long claws on his front feet (longer than his toes), and the longer tail.

That's the piece near the tail? Any insight to the discoloration in the two pics? Do they come off?

Right. What discoloration? Some of the others are starting to peel up but I haven't tried to take them off, yet.

It's pinkish in the first photo, and reddish in the second which would not be normal.

It’s been a week now and he’s lost two scutes. Neither of them look to be growing back. I’m going to start looking for a herp vet. Thank y’all for the responses!

On the areas that lost scutes, does it feel smooth or rough?

Smooth is a good sign, but the coloring is still very off. Any luck with a vet?
