Healthy Weight and Size

I would like to make graphs for the body weight and size ratios for various species, similar to both the Jackon ratio or Donoghue ratio as well as formulas from the data. The thought behind this is enable turtle keepers to better assess a healthy weight for their pets.

What I would need from members is the following;
  • Straight carapace length (SCL), measured as illustrated here.
  • Body weight
  • Overall health
  • Age (if known)
  • Species
  • Gender
Please specify the units you are using, I can do whichever conversions I wish, but I would still need fairly accurate measurements to start with. The more accurate the measurement, the better the data will be. Please email me the data, members should be able to from my profile. If not, please send a PM.

If I get enough data I will happily share the graphs and formulas with the community. I am going to see about reaching out to other communities as well.

•Straight carapace length (SCL): 14 cm
•Body weight: 293 grams
•Overall health:he has a little infection on his shell (under treatment and doing well), he is allergic to fish and the vet told me he was a little thinner than a normal turtle of the same age.
•Age (if known): about 2 and a half years old
•Species: Trachemys Scripta Elegans *from Rio Grande
•Gender: Male

•Straight carapace length (SCL): 24 cm
•Body weight: 1,553 grams
•Overall health: she had a pneumonia last winter, but now she is really ok. The vet said she was all right and that maybe because of her fast growth she could lay eggs till this last spring
•Age (if known): about 2 and a half years old
•Species: Trachemys Scripta Scripta
•Gender: Female

Shortly I will post data about my 2 new turtles

Thanks for the info. I haven't really gotten a lot so far, we'll see how long it takes.

by Gurgi's Mom
Straight carapace length (SCL): 10 cm
Body weight: 135 grams
Overall health: Good, never any known illnesses
Age (if known): Approx 3yrs old
Species: Chrysemys picta picta/marginata
Gender: Male

Thanks so much for this - I often wonder if Gurgi is too light. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! If I use the Donoghue Ratio - Gurgi is under weight. :(

Don't know if you're still collecting information on this, but now that I've actually measured Donnie properly, here you are:

SCL: 7.5"
Weight: 1.36kg
Overall health: good, no illnesses. has injured herself once.
Age: no clue. She was 4" when I bought her almost 6 years ago.
Species: RES
Gender: female

Hello, I was on another thread earlier and have been trying to find an extension that I can drop a file into and be able to upload the past 6 months measurements of my 2 RES for use on this sight. I have been measuring in inches and ounces and am not looking forward to converting everything into grams and mm but these measurements are undoubledly more accurate. So I will post the measurements I took today in grams and mm for both, they are still very young and I am presumptious to think they are both female, but that is how their tails seem to present yet( they are only 6-7 months old).

Shelly:
Species:RES
Age: 6-7mos
Gender: female(?)
SCL: 77.73mm
Weight: 74g
Overall Health: vigerous

Kelly:
Species:RES
Age: 6-7mos
Gender: female(?)
SCL: 46.01mm
Weight: 19g
Overall Health: vigerous
