General Care Discussion :: What is coming out of his butt...?

Sorry if this is too gross, but I'm a little concerned for my male RES. I'm sort of new to RES's, and I've had this one for almost a year now. He is 6 inches in length.

Of course I don't watch him 24/7. But the other day I glanced over and noticed, from a distance, what looked like a giant black ball trying to come out of his butt hole... It kept going in and out. It was so long/big it could almost reach halfway up his stomach. Is this a normal occurrence with RES? Is he trying to poop? Is there something wrong with his intestines, possibly?

This was over a day ago. And I don't see anything in the tank if it did ever come out of him. Or he ate it.

As its been pointed out... it's his penis. It's called fanning when they take it out and it should be fine as long as it goes back in. If you keep him with other turtles, then you might want to temporarily separate them.
