General Care Discussion :: RES Ear Discoloration ?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I've noticed discoloration on my RES's red stripes, with white and brownish patches visible instead of only his vibrant red. There isn't any other discoloration on the rest of his skin nor is there a swollen 'bubble' so I don't believe it's an abscess. Is this just something that just means he's getting older, or is it a sign of something else?
It is present on both sides if that helps, and sorry if these aren't the best photos, but he doesn't like to stay still v much, so I did my best.

There will be variations among RES but if you are noticing a very visible change, it's likely melanism. His shell and skin will become darker and grayer. Some of the stripes will turn into spots as well.

Okay! Thank you so much! It's definitely a relief to hear. I was worried he was getting sick or something.

At the time my Mickey was losing his patterns and color neighbors said that's an ugly turtle...I told them he's a handsome devil !
