My turtles are rescues from someone in our neighborhood, they were treated horribly (no basking spot/light, a fish filter for the tank, 20 gal for 3 adults, etc). they both have severe buildup on their scutes, and im not sure what to do about it. at this point scrubbing with a toothbrush does nothing. Is it bad to remove buildup on your own or do they need it?

Can you post a picture of the shells? Also when they are dry. As a general rule, never force any scutes, even if they are loose.
