General Care Discussion :: Orangish Brown color on lower portion inside mouth

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi all,

It has been so long since I've actually posted on here, mostly because my turtle does so well. I had one tiny little chip on the shell in 2010 and really no other issues since then. I have had Michelangelo (a female, despite the name) for 26 years now. I got my turtle when I was 12 and I am 37 almost 38. It's been so long. Love him (her) so much! 26 years!

With time comes life changes. My mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a couple of years back, and I feel like that has caused me to neglect my turtle more than I ever have. Just so many other responsibilities, but I love my turtle. I know I do the right thing, but I need to do a tank upgrade and get a new filter as the old one is not adequate. Filter has been broken and usually I put him outside in the summer anyway. Figured I would wait. But it's been over 100 degrees every day, so that's also been on pause. I'm in the process now of getting the new tank and filter, but it's been a few months since he's really had the proper filtration. Everything else UVB, etc., has been fine.

Today I just temporarily moved Michelangelo to a bathtub while I install a new tank. I figured this way I can completely clean the water every single day without relying on a filter. Today while feeding him a shrimp treat, I noticed the inside of his mouth has an orangish/brown color:

( Edit: The white stuff is the shrimp! So it's not any kind of puss or anything. It was the only way I could get him to open his mouth. )

I'm not sure if this constitutes as red. Or if this is just from the krill pellet treats I feed him. Does this look really horrible to anyone? Will definitely bring him to his vet, but it's usually around $400. Wanted to check to see if anyone has seen this before before I rush over. I don't think it's a big enough emergency for urgent care, so I'm posting it here. Let me know your thoughts!

The inside of the mouth should be pink. The only time I’ve seen darker red is when it might be blood related to an injury. While I don’t think that is the case, I’m not sure what to make of it. There aren’t any cheaper options just for a check-up?

The inside of his mouth has always been a nice pink! I'm not sure if he bit a stone or something. OR if he has some sort of bacterial infection. If you haven't really seen it too much as the expert, I think I'll see how he is doing for a few days in the nice clean water.

But if it doesn't go away, I'll have to bite the bullet and just take him to the vet. (A vet visit is usually $250 to start, and then it just goes up from there. That's where I came up with the $400. I brought my 11 year old Bearded Dragon to the vet two years ago and it was $800 by the time it was all done.) I know that his husbandry has been off since my mom got sick. We did everything with him together. I'm not cleaning the tank, the filter broke. But his new tank will be installed soon! And he's enjoying his massive tub right now. His appetite and habits are still the same. I will say though, hasn't laid eggs in two seasons. No binding, just no eggs. I'm not sure if this is a big issue too.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. Sounds like you have things figured out already. I would stick to a simple diet... just the staples for now... leafy greens and some pellets. I would also search around for other vets... things might have changed since you last visited them.
