Was the vita shell recommended by the vet? From everything that I've read, it does more harm than good. When used over a period of time it can actually keep the shell from breathing and be cause for problems.

Nope wasnt recomended, Just read about it .. you dont use it everyday
it is a weekly thing If you choose that.. I ordered it from foster and smiths

Doesnt he look way better now with that crappy old shell off, He is such a happy boy very interactive and he loves when I talk to him.. he is so relaxed with me now I can sit while he basks and he just looks at me

He looks sooo much better! You can see the difference even with the shine from the rub on his shell.

Just reading this over...what can be done about mineral deposits from hard water? How does one get the water ...soft? in the tank? I think this may be what my turt has too. Not quite as dull as the one pictured here, but pretty dull. Thanks.

The problem with my turtle was not hard water or mineral deposit
His previous owners kept him in a 10 gallon tank with a inch of water
he did not have any proper lighting, he wasnt fed properly either :cry:
When I got him and got him in proper amount of water, proper lighting
and good diet.. in 30 days he shedded that nasty shell and is on his way to
a good recovery

There are water conditioners made specifically for hard water. You should get a hard water test first to make sure this is the problem.
