I cover my RES's stock tank in the winter with a sheet of Lexan (I think that's what it's called) that covers approximately 3/4 of the tank (not the basking area) I lay it on two very narrow pieces of wood going across the stock tank that raise it enough so that it doesn't interfer with any hosing going into the tank. At night, when I've got the lights on and I want him to sleep, I lay a big sheet of cardboard over it, which is almost the size of the tank.
