Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Fri Dec 23, 2011 4:06 pm   Re: POST YOUR BASKING AREA PICTURES HERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im a bit of a Newb in the turtle game! I took in 3 turtles from a friend (2 red ear sliders, 1 painted i believe). Then just a few weeks ago i took in another larger Red Ear Slider. So my 75 gallon (I think its 75 gallons my buddy gave it to me. It might be 60 or 65) got a little crowded. I was looking at that turtle topper thing but i really didnt like how it looked being my tank is in my living room and when i have some buddies over and were drunk we just watch them! lol So I wanted something a little more appealing to the eye. Also I wanted it to be bigger.

After googling other peoples Turtle topper/basking area designs I designed my own. Me and a buddy built it and considering neither of us are much of the carpenter we did a fairly good job! some crooked cuts but most is hidden in the black paint! Anyways Im proud of it and love showing it off! I dont know how Im gonna decorate the inside with plants yet. But the turtles all seem happier and have a lot of space now!

-A picture from today. I cleaned out the tank and put in a gravel filter to help keep the nasty crap from collecting in the rocks. Also took out a lot of the rocks/bricks i had stacked in the corner from the old basking area! Created a lot more space in the tank!

Still working but like I said... I pretty proud of it! lol

Looks nice. You should create a build thread for your setup. That way you can keep track of your progress and other members can help out. You have 4 turtles in that tank? In my opinion, you're gonna need a lot more space. You should probably get rid of the gravel...some turts like to chomp on it. I would replace it with some pool filter sand. Good luck and keep us posted. Welcome to the site!

I am by no means an expert, but I would go to General Care and search for some insight there, or post your own topic here in the Indoor Habitat forum. People may be away for the Holidays, but I'm sure you will get some good advice by posting your own topic when everyone returns. Good luck!

Post Posted: Sun Dec 25, 2011 3:32 pm   My 9" RES cork bark area she climbed on within a minute!

Well, after looking through 35 pages of basking area photos and talking to some folks, I decided to go with the simplest, easiest, yet elegant solution - cork bark. I got a piece of Zoo-Med's Jumbo product - labeled CF-J, and crossed my fingers that it would be wide enough to fit the 17.5" internal glass to glass size I have in this 75 gallon tank (which is a standard 48"x 18" tank as measured from the outside.

I didn't want to immediately have to deal with building acrylic walls - and (hats off to you) some of the very complex designs you folks beautifully built - I just wanted to get as much water/swimming space cleared as possible (there was this Reptology Large Turtle Pier that had posts taking up a LOT of swimming space - I'd say it blocked 1/3 of the tank in many ways).

I wrote to Zoo-Med, and they refuse to give dimensions for their various 'models' of this cork bark - even though they do have several 'models' that imply dimensions, like 'small,' medium,' 'large,' 'extra-large,' and 'Jumbo.' When I questioned them about this they were a bit dumbfounded and said that they couldn't give dimensions aside from weight (which as of the time of my 'conversation' with them their page also did NOT display) - so I guess nobody ever questioned them about what was inherently problematic with their entire approach. I think it's bull shrog that they can't give dimensions frankly - at least approximate - plenty of other items in the world give approx. dimensions and I'm sure that if they wanted to - when they tagged these at whatever factory, they could give rough dimensions to each size category. It really made me very, very annoyed at them. Esp. because the Amazon (and other re-sellers) were clearly confused by their entire marketing of cork bark - most of the time the item image did not match the written description (as in the Amazon ad) - and the Amazon re-seller DID give dimensions of 24" x 24" x 5" - and I'd say that I have NO IDEA where they got these dimensions which were half reality and half fantasy and even if there WERE correct what does a 24" x 24" x 5" piece of cork bark look like anyway that shows a PHOTO of one of Zoo-Med's ROUND models (not the flat that the written description talks about). That would be a HUGELY thick 24"x 24" piece of rounded cork bark wouldn't it?

So- - in the end it was, IMHO, more luck than anything that it worked out with the Zoo-Med piece (it had been recommended to me to go to nurseries to find this material - and I was lazy (well - I'm not lazy but in this regard I was willing to give the Web a try first)). Meanwhile, it seemed to have a natural ramp cut across half of the length that was perfect - probably Zoo-Med either 'picked' it well or cut it that way although it wasn't sawed - so maybe broke it that way - no idea really.

It took a while and a number of cuts for me (being geometrically challenged a bit :-) ) to get it to fit without breaking it - and I saved the extras as 'wedge' pieces as you can see in the photos because while it would work fine even floating up and down with the water level (WHICH I PROMISE I WILL RAISE WHEN i CAN FIGURE OUT CONTAINMENT) I thought the wedge pieces were good for really stabilizing it.

It's about 1.5" -2" thick pretty uniformly (where is that 5" :-) )

The only picture I neglected to take - like a dummy - is one from directly above. But it's a nice big platform for her - and I could easily add to it by ordering another large piece if for some reason it seemed good for her in the long run...???

So she climbed on it - no exaggeration - within one minute of me putting it in there and actually I left her and she was SLEEPING on it later that night as if she really just loved it and didn't want to sleep in the water as usual (don't worry - the ramp is a big, wide, not steep thing and EASY for her so that's not it.

Here are some images, albeit not that great.

Hello,

We have a 4yr old res. Had her since she was 2 in. Thought she was a boy, hence the name Freddie..officially she is Fredericka now, but we still call her Freddie. :)

Here's a few pics of our setup..125gal tank. This is full view..the blue cover is a little pan cover that fit perfect over the ramp area. And already had a door cut out to get into the basking area. Gives her some security while getting out of the water..and it holds in the heat. She is in my basement, so this helps a lot.

What the inside of the basking area looks like.

Added a extension to the ramp so she can life her fat body up. Works perfect. :)

i converted an old 20 gallon (30"x12"x12") tank into a ATBA for my girl Phibious. it now sits on top of a 55 gallon (48"x12"x20") that a friend gave me. the whole thing is still to small for her but considering that she lived in that 20 gallon before i got her i feel we are on the right track. i broke out the bottom and replaced it with a ceramic tile and a custom plexi ramp. i have to thank VeipaCray for his build thread, great stuff and a vital resource. the tank still needs some decor but all the major parts are done.

the ramp just before it was bent. the wider part was attached to the bottom inside lip of the small tank

i used "industrial strength" velcro to attach it to the top of the bigger tank . Phibious was out of the water and basking within 6 hours. fearless

Looks really good. I'm glad the tile and ramp worked for you. What did you use to attach the ramp to the tank? I ended up epoxying mine to the underside of the tile... which works well, but this looks much more clean than what I did.

I agree, that looks really good. Probably the best use a 20 gallon turtle tank I've seen.

i used aquarium grade silicone to attach the ramp. i attached it to the plastic "rim guard" (i don't know what else to call it) that is around the base of the small tank, instead of under the tile. after i removed the glass bottom, and replaced the bottom guard, the lip on the inside of the tank provided the perfect amount of space put a bead of silicone in and place the tile and plexi down inside the tank. :? does that makes sense? i was a litttle worried about the strength of the silicon but after 48 hours i could pick the whole thing up by the tile, so i'm not too concerned. the only other thing i added was a strip of terarium liner to cover the non-ramp part of the plexi. it kinda looks like a welcome mat for the ATBA.

ATBA11.jpg
i had to weight the ramp down with a brick while the silicone was curing. otherwise the weight of the ramp would have fliped the whole thing up
ATBA10.jpg
the piece of terarium liner is covering the flat part of the plexi. i attached it with velcro so if it gets nasty i can just throw it away and cut a new piece.

hopefully that explains it. i tried to keep it simple for easy cleaning. the whole ATBA can be lifted off and hosed out if need be. Phibious seems to be adapting very well to her new surroundings. swimming, basking, and eating with no apparent problems. she was not in good health a month ago when i got her so this is all very encouraging. much thanks to everyone on this site for the ideas, questions, and answers that i have spent so many enjoyable hours pouring over.

Silicone sticks well to tile but not so well on plexiglas. Sounds like you and Phibious have made a lot of progress. Keep up the good work!

Hey Everyone! I haven't posted in a long time, however, I look at the info on this site, which is amazing, almost every week. I have looked at every picture under this topic and am very excited to start building my ATBA! Here is my current set up. I am going to put shelving brackets on the wall behind the tank, and build a plexiglass box to rest on these brackets. I'll have a ramp going into the water so Tucker can get up. I'm also going to make a portion of the ATBA a nesting area since Tucker is a girl. I am still pricing materials and hope to get started soon. I just had to post something though! Thanks for this website and all of the great ideas!!!! It's by far and away the best animal site on the internet in my opinion.
