basking temperature

i have the uv thing thats hot only, it is right over the rock maybe about 6 inches and my turtles seem to love it. well how do i measure the tempeture. ooh yeah the bulb isnt very strong its only 50 watts.

Put a thermometer under the light on the basking area and check the temp after about 30 minutes. A basking temp of 88-90F would be good.

If the bulb only gives out heat, you need a UVB light as well. They're flourescent, don't give off much heat, but the UVB rays are necessary for a healthy shell and bones.

is the uvb just like sun light? because i take my turtles out side regularly.

Yes, sunlight is good. If you can take them out regularly for a few hours at time, they should be OK. If you live in an area that has 4 seasons, however, they're going to need a UVB light when they can't be brought outside.
