Since it has been pretty hot in CA, my turtle tank temp is about 80-81 degrees during the day. I've tried using frozen water bottles, but according to the calculations from this site, I would need 16 lbs of ice to lower the temp 5 deg for 70 gallons of water.

And for the lazy:
1) Take your pool/tank volume, in gallons.
2) Divide by 1,000.
3) Multiply by the number of degrees (Fahrenheit) you'd like to cool the water.
4) Multiply that number by 43.75.

Thanks jdub107... so glad I don't have that problem. Just seems to me if you need to add that much ice, you'd have to removed water to be able to put pounds of ice in so you might as well just do a partial water change with colder water.. lol. I mean you have to go through all that work anyway


So maybe a partial change and some floating frozen bottles. I'm so glad I live in the northeast

I only wish it was that simple. I don't even have enough storage space for that amount of water. The water coming out of the faucet is at about 80 deg as well. I have a 5 gallon and 3 gallon bucket that I filled to use for water changes and to refill water from evaporation. The water in there is about 76 degs, but 7-7.5 gallons (can't fill buckets all the way up due to spillage issues) of water isn't nearly enough. And also, since I work, I'm not home during the day when the temp is the hottest.

OUCH so even your tap water is too warm. Hmmm maybe keep a spare gallon or 2 in the fridge for water changes?? Not sure if 2 gallons of water will do much if any good at all. I do not envy you in the least or any that live in areas like that.

Wow, that cool, mine comes out at 90*, I checked with a thermometer.

ok, if you put your water on all cold it comes out that warm?? Thank goodness for my nice cold well water

how can cold tap water come out at 90 degrees? that just doesn't make any sense.....
