Hello,

I have a 15 watt sun glo bulb in my tank

my question is do i need to run 2 lights>

the air temp in the tank around the basking area is 85

As of right now, I have it set up with the 15 watt bulb and then the normal lamp

i have a theomommeter sitting right in the basking area gauging the temprature.

I did a search for the sunglo lamp that you mentioned above and all I found is that it is "full-spectrum". If my memory is correct, I've read on here that if it says full-spectrum then it isn't a UVB. No where does it say that it is UVB on the decription I read. If it was a UVB bulb it would say it gave off a certain percentage of UVB rays. 7% to 10% UVB is what you should look for in a UVB bulb.

Someone tell me if this is correct. I think it is but not 100% sure.

Try researching the web first just to make sure. I'd hate to pass you false info, but that's what it sounded like to me because UVB wasn't listed in any of the descriptions I read. I know when I first got on here the UVB light was what confused me the most. That's when I learned that it saying full-spectrum doesn't neccessarily mean UVB as well.

Many people learn to look here or do their own researching versus relying on the pet store people. They aren't always as knowledgable as they want you to think they are.

Ok, Im working on trying to locate a uvb light now.


Right now I have a lamp that sits on top of the tank that provides the heat part, I need to find something that can co-exist in the same area over a 5 1/2 gallon tank.

any ideas?

or if there are any blubs out there that will produce enough heat and give off uvb as well.

I just want to get this all set up for my little guy

i want one to fit into the exisisting lamp that i have that will cover both the uva and uvb and i have a ceramic lamp that just lays on top of the cage it uses normal light bulbs.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but mercury vapor bulb is the only bulb that you can buy that provides heat (UVA) and all the UVB rays that your turtle needs. They are costly from what I've read and not recommended for a small tank (nothing under 40-50gallons). The links that you've listed below are for UVB bulbs. They say they provide some UVA but not enough to provide the heat needed for the basking area. Two separate bulbs are needed unless you have a large tank and money for a mercury vapor bulb.

The second link you provided from petsmart is the UVB bulb I use which should be replaced every 6 months at least.
