Put your filter intake/outtake higher so it wouldn't move the sand.

as long as your intake is about an inch and half away from the bottom it will be fine, and debris and stuff will just sit on top of the sand so its pretty easy to clean.

Yep just keep the intake a little above the sand. If it's a canister filter, the filter media is usually before the impeller so even if some does get sucked up it'll get caught by the filter media before it can get into the impeller to do any damage. You could put some kind of filter floss over the intake too, if you're very concerned about it but I wouldn't want to impede water flow like that.
