Yes but currently my tank doesn't have many hiding places. Would that be an issue?

How big is your turtle? They eat off glass rocks wood etc. If you don't have any algae then you don't want any because you will have to feed them.Edit.. actually that's not true they eat leftovers if you have other fish and feed in tank.

Sheldon is 7". I was thinking about putting the algae eater inside his basking platform which does grow algae. It's a large critter carrier with egg crate attached to the top with water and decorations inside.

They don't cost that much. I say try it.

This is true.

I use "Jungle Pond Algae Relief" in my tank. The lamps cause the algae to for and take over the tank. I had a serious algae problem and the only thing that worked was the Jungle Pond. I've used it since my YBS turtle was a little baby, and it doesn't seem to effect him at all. My tank is 100% algae free!!

Is it possible for algae to "infect" a filter? We switched to a 55 gallon filter system on our 20 gallon tank about two months ago. The first month was amazing. No algae for nearly 3 weeks (because we use tap water and feed in our tank, algae is a constant problem). But after about a month and the first water change, we noticed the algae growth after 3 days. Now, we can barely go a week without needing to clean everything out. When we changed the water the second time, we noticed a white/orange algae growing in the tube on top of the filter and in filter vents. After thoroughly cleaning it, we put everything back together, but in a week, it was back as well as the green algae. We've tried feeding our RES in a separate container, but he refuses to eat that way. Distilled water is our next step, but any feedback would be great.

I wouldn't say "infect" but that is a good description. Once you get it, it always comes back quicker. The white/orange might not be algae... maybe hard water and or bacteria? Can you post a picture of it?

Foolishly, I cleaned the tank before checking back. So, I don't have a picture to take. But, when it comes back next time, I will. Would boiling the filter work? It's the only way I can think to get to all the crevices this stuff is hiding in. Also, trying distilled water this time around, so we'll see if that helps some.

Removing the food source (usually too much light) is the simplest way to deal with algae. A UV filter will also destroy algae. Distilled might take out some of the good stuff in the water.
