I had my buy me a new UVB bulb yesterday since its been 6 months. I've been using a 5% bulb for that time. For some reason she got me a 10% UVB desert bulb. Before I have her exchange it, thats too much right?

no, the bulbs produce no where near what the natural UVB is in the sun. Your 10% is good.

The higher % you can go the better.

10% is good.

Just don't have it quite as close to the turtle as you would for a 5% bulb. About 8-10 inches. Is it a Reptisun 10.0 compact flourescent or tube (or another brand)?

Yeah, I think that's what it is.

It says Reptisun 10.0 Self ballasted compact fluorescent lamp.

It just threw me when it said 10% Desert. Currently the light is about 6 inches away, I would have to lower the water level about 2 inches. Is 6 inches okay?

The UVB in these bulbs is nowhere near as strong as the sun. I honestly do not think a 10 bulb would be an issue at 6". I think concern is more speculation on what could potentially happen, theoretically, than a true issue with the bulb.

I'm perhaps a bit more conservative, having read on another site that a "blast" of UVB rays in the eyes (if the turtle is really close) isn't particularly good for them. The Reptisun 10.0 compact flourescent is supposed to emit the rays for up to 20 inches.
