Hi. I just upgrade to a 55 gallon tank for my two hatchlings. I am planning on putting sand in the bottom. Are there any plants I can grow in the bottom for the turtles to snack on? I am upgrading from a 10 gallon so I want to add lots of things for them to hide in and play around so I will take suggestions also.

I think rooted aquatic plants don't normally do well in turtle tanks, though there are plenty of the floating variety. You might even want to keep them separate since RES like to shred things (and this can quickly clog the filter).

You can try plants that can be tied to rocks and wood like java fern, aquatic moss, anubias. Or stem plants that grow well floating such as anacharis,hornwort, water lettuce. My turtle is super destructive and shreds,eats, or digs up any plants (even plastic ones) although I've found that marimo algae balls work for me.

Anacharis is my favorite turtle plant.

Not every plant will thrive in every tank. The water parameters of your tank may work well for some plants and not others. Experimentation is key.
