fiter for 55 gal

ok I am getting a 55 gal(free
) this week for turtle - I now have whisper 60 on my 30 gal-what is suggested for the bigger tank? I believe I need a filter for a 85 gal? I am currenty looking at "Big Al's". Do they make a Whisper for this size tank or should I look at a diff brand? Also I have not order a filter on line before- is there any extras needed when I order? Any suggestions? Yall are the best.

The Rena Filstar XP3 is a good choice. And then you won't need to get a bigger filter a year or so from now when you need to get a bigger tank.

I have a 75 gal and I just bought the XP3...LOVE IT! Worth every penny I paid for it too! When I purchased the filter the only thing extra that I bought were the round ceramic bio media things...sorry, I can't think of the name at the moment. There is a post of mine in the indoor set up section asking about the xp3 and it's needs. It's rated for 125 gal, so you should be set for awhile.

An aquaclear 110 would also be an good filter for a 55 gallon. This is a waterfall kind of filter, though, so depending on your water level, it may be noisy.
Look for a filter with a GPH of 500 or more.

Speaking of being noisy...mine doesn't make any noise. However, my bubble screen is underwater. If the water level goes down, it makes some noist, but not near what I was used to.

Is a bubble screen different from the bars that make bubbles? I know I am retarded sorry-I have heard good things about all the filters yall have listed.-I appreciate the help-great to have experience at your finger tips so to speak. LOL I will let ya know what I get/order this weekend.

I think she's talking about the spray bar that squirts the water back into the tank.

I keep my spray bar underwater and point it towards the surface of the water so it agitates the surface of the water and keeps it from getting stagnant.

yeah spray bar is what I meant...it had been a long day. Sorry for the confusion. I have mine underwater too, but even when the water level drops it doens't make that much noise...not like a waterfall. Even aimed down mine keeps the water moving. It blows the fish around even, so the water isn't going to get stagnant.
