Hello all,

I need to buy a new filtration system for my Red-eared Slider and Yellow Belly. I have 55 gallon tank. The RES is about 6" shell width and YB is about 4" shell width. Can anyone recommend a filtration system to buy like at Petco or Petsmart for example? In 2014 I will do a DIY system, but for now I need to buy one....asap.

I have a FX5 working in my 55. If I were to buy a new filter today for the 55 gallon I would get the fluval g6 for convenience. (This is only if budget isnt a factor). The FX5 will be able to handle the bio load of a turtle better than most other filters.

Sunsun makes filters that Actually have more head pressure than the Fx5. I own the fx5 and for the money im not impressed!

The G6 doesn't hold enough bio media or have nearly enough flow rate to deal with an adult turtle. I've done several write ups of the G6 and put it on our not recommended list. It looks great but falls short with its expensive price, proprietary media containers and poor performance.

The FX5 / FX6 are bang for the buck fantastic. The large eheims are technically better but are a bit pricey.

Sorry I miss spoke about head pressure. Yea if money is no problem the fx5 will handle a 55 gal tank but sunsun filters are a lot cheaper and growing in popularity. I have to swallow my words about the Fx I just did a test with mine it took 30 seconds to fill a 5 gallon bucket. thats 10 gal a min. 10gal x 60 min is 600 gallons an hour. Pretty Damn impressive! Oops oh well I can admit when Im Wrong! I wonder how a sun sun would do with this test ?Oh yea thats with a clean filter just cleaned it yesterday. I will do the same test in a month when its dirty.

The sunsun's are cheap, OK filters but don't hold nearly enough media. I suppose if you're good with having 2 or three of them on an adult turtle tank they'd do well but that just screams extra maintenance to me.

Still, I can't help but wonder how much water they Actually circulate?

I was looking at this filter. It has no media baskets and just uses a bunch of big sponges? And it has other issues.

I stayed away from the sunsun due to the fact that I would have needed 4 of them, but for a 55 I think that they would be awesome for the money.
