Hi there. I'm a newbie to filters! With my turtle in the 80's my folks never had a filter.
I now have a 55gallon tank and am in need of some filter advice. I would really like a carbon filter, but am not looking to spend $200!!!! Can someone help me with some good filters to look in to?!

Thanks Steve.
Is that what a lot of you use, the external filter systems?

Yes, external (canister) filters are the recommended type for turtles. Most of us don't have a UV Sterilizer, though that is a nice bonus if you choose to use it.

Steve im not sure if you realize this but that filter has no media baskets. The rena xp and sunsun are also cheap alternatives.

True, though it looks good for a 55 gallon and you can throw some bagged media in it. I still use my XPs, though there has been some quality issues with some who have bought them recently. I'm still kicking myself for not getting the FX5 when they were $200.

I think they have been saying it was leaking from the main seal or where the cord exits the housing.

I guess most filters have some issues . I was reading the CFS 700 had O-ring issues and the tops develop cracks where the tightening nuts make contact. Well its going to be here today so I will update if I have issues.

About the only thing I dont like about the xp3 is that the intake and output tubes are not the sliding adjustable type.

Some filters come with sliding intake and output tubes. The plastic part that is in the tank. The Fx6 now comes with an adjustable or sliding strainer tube. So you can position the inflow and outflow at different heights inside the tank. The cascade 700 came with an adjustable outflow tube. By outflow Im talking about the return hose to the filter.

Sounds pretty cool and useful. I wonder if it can be rigged to fit an XP.
