Circulation in a tank

I have always had 55 gal tanks or less in the past and the filter has always provided enough circulation in the tank. I recently upgraded to a 240 gallon. So how do I know if I need a circulation pump, and what size, and where to put one?

I have a 300 gallon stock tank with one fx5 and one Marineland 1200 Maxi jet set up as a circulation pump. Its about 8" deep and I kinda point it towards the surface. It circulates 1300 gph and is real strong. I think it would work great in your tank. Cost probably around $23 from amazon. If you think an fx moves water hold on to your hat when you plug this bad boy in!! And congrats on the tank!

Thank you Kansas. Wow, 1300 gallons is a lot of water.

I'd see how well the two do but I think it should be enough. Maxijets are pretty nice, I use a smaller model to pump out the water in my tank during changes.

Do either of your turts have any issues in the turbulence from the pumps?

I think they might Actually like it? My gold fish sure do. It doesn't keep them from using the whole tank.

That's s the one I have. The only complaint I would have is they need to be speed adjustable for smaller tanks . I would say Go for it and if its too much just call them for a return ticket and get the next size smaller.

I ordered it, I was looking at the folks who had the smaller tanks going with the 600 so I figured that the 1200 would be fine in my 240 gallon that is 8 feet long.

That's what I was thinking. You have a large tank. Should work great. Let me know what you think when you get it. I really like it.

As Steve mentioned you can also use it for making water changes. I use a python like system for cleaning the sand. But today while doing a partial water change in my 300 gal tank I got thinking I sure am wasting a lot of water using water to remove water! So I put up the python and used my maxi jet to drain the water. Like I said this little pump moves a lot of water. No doubt I will use it from now on. Thanks Steve!
