Basking area questions

Hello!

I have a 5 year old RES named Squirtle, and he is growing rather large. I saw some basking spot ideas that I really liked on this site and had some questions if anyone would be so kind to help!

I saw DIY spots made of eggcrate and zip ties, and was thinking of going this route. I just wondered how this stays stable when the turtle would climb up on it because in the photos I've seen, it just rests on the inner rim of the tank. Does it stay up THAT well? Or does it need reinforcement? If so, what could be used to keep it from collapsing?

Thanks :D

If its on the tim of a tank, there's usually an indent that a hood would rest in. That plus the weight should hold it. You can add a small piece of tile to add to it. You can also secure it below the rim, strong suction cups or magnets come to mind.

Welcome to the site!

Thank you very much! There is an inner rim where I see most are set, I just thought when he was climbing up he'd bring it down haha.
Maybe I can reuse the 3M hooks I have holding his tank cover down for this!
I just want to revamp his area...he seems bored and needs a better basking area.

Adding a bit of weight would help it feel more secure as well. I've seen rocks and fake plants added to make it look really nice.
