hi every body. first of all i should say that I've read almost all informative and useful information in this website and i'm very grateful about it. but still i have a dilemma; is there any alternative choice for UVB light for a RES?
i just found out that this kind of light bulb is so rare in my country and those few sellers offer unfair and very expensive prices. and still this light should be replaced every 6-9 months.
I even tried to take my RES out for using and basking under the natural sun light, but he rubed his eyes as if the sun light bothers him and was seeking for a shelter under something o in the corner of my yard. so now i'm stuck and wonder, i can't buy that UVB light nor take him out under the sun.
I also ask those experts(!) in my town who were selling fish and like, and they just told me that using a small LED lamp would be sufficient. i've bought one but my turtle barely basks under it and i'm afraid that would be suitable for him.

another question about Lighting is that while i was reading about light bulbs, i encountered to ther term "householdlight bulb". considering that i'm not an European or American guy, i didn't understand what you meant by "Household light bulbs" for UVA light source. here in my country we use 5 most common bulbs as household light bulbs. please take a look at them and tell me which one is better for my RES's UVA light source. thanks in advance

Sorry but what about UVB substitution? isn't there any other kind of light bulb, cheaper or a bit more common and accessible?
and does basking in sun need any predetermination or something? because as i said he doesn't bask and runs away from sun

UVB bulbs are generally more expensive and hard to get in some countries. It is a specialty bulb, so there are no similar substitutions. Sunlight would be your best best.. a couple of hours a week should be fine. It does not need to be direct sunlight, even indirect should be OK. I'd also make sure his pellets have some Vitamin D3 added in (check the ingredients).

Steve is correct, your turtle can get vitamin D3 from food or UVB. Sunlight is probably best.

I live near Chicago and there are RES in ponds all around me. I see them sunning at noon right now.

I live pretty much at the extreme northern end of their natural range.

I have no clue if they are basking in direct sun at noon there.

I'm also don't know if you can get UVB/UVI readings locally, but you may want to try sun earlier in the morning or later in the day.
