I'm considering lining the bottom of my tank with a strong fiberglass mesh netting, and placing my substrate rocks and foliage on top of the mesh. When cleanup time comes once a week, after removing all of the plants and docking station it would allow me to easily lift everything up off the bottom in the net, and rinse everything off - rather than picking up about 100 or so rocks individually.

My question is this - is fiberglass safe to use under water, and will it harm the several small fish and RES I have in the tank? Thanks.

I don't know about fiberglass, but if you want to do this, isn't there plastic mesh you could use?

You could use fewer rocks to make it easier to clean, or another possibility would be to use a plastic scoop to take them out (better than taking them out individually).

RES tend to dig and such in the bottom- I can't imagine that the mesh would stay in place.

Unless you are using an undergravel filter, why all the rocks?
