I need a couple large half-logs and cant find them anywhere. None of the pet stores here have them. They have small ones, suitable for, say a lizard but I need something that is large enough for an adult box turtle to hide under. I've checked online also. Anyone?

I'm not sure how big you would need, but there are some on ebay. Have you looked there?

Not sure if this is what you are looking for... there are some half-logs here: http://www.undergroundreptiles.com/hideboxes.htm

They're not real, but here is the description:
The Turtle Hut is the best choice in natural-looking hides. This hide looks like wood, but is made of resin instead, making it safe for full or partial submersion. Perfect for turtles, tortoise, or other reptiles.
Small - 3.25" x 3.5" x 1.75"
Medium - 4.75" x 4.75" x 2"
Large - 6.75" x 5.5" x 2.75"
XLarge - 8.75" x 7.5" x 4.25"
Giant - 10.75" x 10.5" x 5.5"

There seem to be a few places cheaper than that link above. Were you looking the "Giant" size?

I seriously wouldn't bother. I have tried adding shelters and whatnot to box turtle pens, but they really prefer to just bury themselves in substrate.

If you must make a shelter, buy a cheap, large, terra cotta pot and half-bury it in the substrate. The prices on those half-logs are outrageous. A terra cotta pot is easier to clean, too- a log can absorb waste and harbor disease, whereas you can bake a pot. Don't waste your money!

Actually, right now in both my boxie tubs they each have a hide log (corkbark) and a plant pot. They both prefer the logs rather than burying in the substrate.
