I'm building a filter and just wondering if there is another option for using the expensive carbon from pet stores. Also what is ammonia remover made of?

it's not as expensive if you buy it in bulk and make your own filter bags. Some places, like Big Als sell carbon and ammonia in big milk cartons. Get that stuff if you can.. and then purchase your own media bags and away you go.

I picked up the 40 oz. Ammo chips already, i didn't see the assorted sizes of bags though. I'll be having another look next time i'm there. Have to get carbon too.
Does recharging the ammonia chips really work? Is there rechargable carbon?

I've never heard of rechargable carbon. At some point it ceases to be effective and will start releasing back into the water if it isn't replaced with a new pack. I change my carbon monthly.
