Basking spot question

Hi,

Question on basking spots? Does it need to have a gradual slope/ramp from the water or if it is just above the water line, can turtles climb on a slab of rock without a ramp?

I have a ramp that mine walks up gradually, but isn't the most attractive ramp in the world. Just wondering if it is needed.

Thanks!

Hey, I'm new to this whole turtle thing, but from what I understand ramps are a good thing. Mine likes to hang out on the ramp, and neither of them ever seems to climb up on the basking area from the part that doesn't have a ramp- at least I've never seen them do it. So I don't know if they need them, but I wouldn't take it away just for cosmetic reasons.

The ramp would make it easier to get on the rock, especially if it has some traction to it.

I've decided to keep the ramp. Last night she basked for the first time! Completely out of the water. As soon as I got a few feet away from her tank, she dove into the water. But later as I sat watching from afar, she made her way up the ramp, not completely out, but 1/2 of her was out.
