Just want to put this out there... Im planning on building a land level on top of my tank for my res. It'll be the size of my 40 gal long( 3ftx1.25ft) and .5ft high. I'm making it from plywood, with a plexiglass, or some sort of plastic front. Im covering the bottom with repticarpet, maybe putting a pool of stagnent water in there that is changed regularly. This way, the res's entire basking area will be on the top level (will have shaded area too.)

What does everyone think?

I think unless it's easily moveable you're gonna have a heck of a time cleaning the tank. Other than that, sounds good. I dont think the pool of water is necessary tho.

yeah, it's not going to be attached to the tank, but it will be heavy enough to not be easily pushed off. and the plexiglass/plastic front will be removable, so I'll be able to sweep out the repticarpet

You lost me at "pool of stagnant water". Will it be sort of a dish pan with the basking area above it? I like the idea of the large basking area but am not sure of the purpose of that extra water area.

Sounds really ambitious to me. By stagnant, I hope you mean unmoving (which will get stagnant pretty quickly). Are you doing this so your turt can have easy access to water if he gets too warm? If so, can you devise a way for him to actually get back into the water more quickly if he wants to? (I'm imagining that he has to make some effort to return to the water due to the large "land" area.) I'd like to see some pics of the finished product. :)
