basking light hours

ok so i leave ny basking light on from 8 am to about 2 am,i was wondering if it eats up electricity because my moms electricity bill came up to 30 dollars extra! and shes freaking out,so i had to turn off my basking light,im worried cause recently my water heater broke.
and she keeps the AC around 60!

That is a really excessive amount of time to leave it on, you should leave it on for 12 hours at most.

I assume you have a heater in your water and you can cover part of the tank (the side without the basking area) to keep the air temp warmer.

unfortunatly my water heater broke down on me 2 days ago ]=
i dont know what to do, well i can cover the tank with a bed sheet, will that work?

Buy another water heater and cover one end of the tank at night.
I have 4 tanks going each with a lamp, one of them on 24/7 and I've never seen that much of a difference on my hydro bill.

Cut the lights at around 8pm, not 2am (get timers for them to keep your turtle on a regular schedule).
The AC is using up way more electricity than the light.

yeah well, you try telling my mom that.
shes stuborn and thinks my basking lamp is raiseing up the electricity bill. when realy its the damn AC, she NEVER turns it off.

Get them as far away from the AC as you can. You could do a partial water change and replace it with warmer water every few hours if you're that concerned. Just make sure you know the temp.

ac is the big problem for high electricity bills
plus u dont need a real basking bulb
i have this spotlight bulb that is energy efficient and high power
it works great for my turtles

You do need a UVB bulb. Does your "spotlight bulb" provide UVB?
