I'm working on getting all the upgraded things for my turtles new "home" but I'm not sure what type of medium you need for either the XP or the fluval 4plus filter. I've not decided which one I'm going to buy at this point either .

i use special carbon filter pads on my fluval 3plus. typically cuz i got a huge mopani wood in my tank for the basking spot. theres soo much tanning leaking out of it so the carbon filter pads remove discolouration.
they always take out dyes and harmful substances, but i dunno bout odor..
they pretty well so far.

For the XP3, possibly with the exception of the bio-media (ceramic rings), everything you need comes with the filter. Sometimes the ceramic rings are included as a promotion (haven't seen that lately, though); if not, you'll have to buy them. The 30ppi and 20ppi pads that come with it will last a long time. If you want to used bio-chem zorb or carbon, though, it's good to buy extra, as they'll need replacing after a month or so. Using the microfiltration pads is up to you (you get one with the filter)--some people say they cause the filter to clog more quickly and don't use them. I make my own from generic floss that I but at a petstore, and haven't had any problems with them.

Someone else will have to help you with the Fluval media. :)
