How many baby turts can I comfortably fit in a 20 gallon tank? I plan to upgrade in about a year when I have the room/cash for a larger tank, so please take this into consideration when answering. Thanks!!

2 would be the max, but even that may be crowded. the general rule is 10 gal of tank per inch of turt. your res will grow in that one year, which is why i think 2 res would be cramped.... And it's (in my opinion) more hassle to have more than one. If they don't get along, you have to get rid of one, or make a whole new setup for the other... tank,filter,heater,lights etc etc... I would suggest having one, but then the final decision is yours

well.. I had a 20gal LONG tank and had 3 turtles in it for a year. Just recently upgraded. Mind you I didn't know the 10gal per inch thing until recently either. I'd personally suggest only one. Just remember they may be small now but they grow.. VERY big. If I had to do it over again, I'd only get one. I've just spent about $600 on the upgrade and I know I'll have to do it again in another year.

That's true, two 10 inch turtles would be about a 200 gallon tank...lol...nothing i can afford. Also, what constitutes a "Long" tank? Mine is 24" long, 12" deep and 16" high, does that qualify as long?

Anyone know if that is considered long?

Well I don't know what size tank you have... but here's a site that pretty much shows the dimension of all common tanks.. Of course, you can get special made ones too .

To be kind to the turtle, only one if the turtle's shell length is anything more than an inch.

it would appear that you have a 20 gallon High or Tall tank not long.

and those weights.. oh my oh my... that's scarey!!!!

Yeah that is pretty scary, but I think thats only if it's filled to the brim, so your turt shouldn't be quite that heavy...hehe.

And yeah, it does look like my tank is high, oh well, it's still good for one baby res!

just a reminder if you do get a hatchling make sure you have things in your tank so he can hang on to them. that water can seem rather deep for the little ones. that's why I opted for the long instead of tall tank, gave them more surface area and not so much depth.
