Pond Substrate?

I just finished my pond, but I doubt I'll ever be done toying with it. Anyways, I used pond liner to lay out the pond. However, I don't want to see the pond liner, not very esthetically appealing to the eye. Should I go for river rocks or play sand? Also open to any other suggestions.

One more question: How do you guys keep your aquatic plants alive? Mine get gobbled up pretty quick.

You can use both! As for aquatic plants, you can some that are grown separately from your pond or one that grows quickly (duckweed comes to mind).

I'll definitely try duckweed, this time around. Which one of the substrates would be easier to clean? My pond is under a tree and thus, gets a lot of foliage.
