the filter has the media in it. and doing very well. the pond is 12x4x4 foot. about 1400 gallons.the pump is a 2500 gallon an hour pump. that gos into the first 55 gallon barrel thats radial flow. the from that one to the next 55 gallon barrel that has all my media and sponges. the first barrel also has some plants in it (pothos and peace lillys)
so let me know what you all here think

That looks great! Some very clever ideas, but are you worried about predators? The white trash can is holding the filter media? How thick is that sheeting?

The sheeting is 1/4 inch thick. Predtors nope. Not were i live. The white trash can is giving the first barrel the radial flow effect. The water comes in at the bottom and is pushed to the top through a pipe in the middle of the white trash can. The can then cause the water and gunk to be pushed back down. The gunk settles on the bottom and the cleaner water rises back up to flow to the next barrel. Witch flows down the pipe to the bottom of barrel 2. Then rises up through all the media and flow back in the pond clean.

Looks great, congrats! My wife and I want a house someday just for the land to build a koi and/or turtle pond, lol.

Regarding predators like Steve mentioned, some of this stuff might be a cheap and easy (and not too horrible-looking) solution: http://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-1-2-in-x ... /204331883 It's sturdy, but also easy to bend/cut and work with. Maybe it's the same stuff you've already got over the basking area, not sure.

Would love more pictures/detail about how the filter works - I usually look at these big outdoor set-ups with DIY filters and am a little baffled/intimidated.

Good job!

I would still think about some protection.. raccoons and birds can seem to come out of nowhere. Pretty cool that you can keep the filter indoors too. I think Linus made a mesh lid for his outdoor setup in his thread.
