I just found out about Tetra's net cover to protect pond critters from predators without the bad looks of other covering. See Netting Cover

I would prefer a covering/mesh that's rigid to prevent any predators from getting in the water.

I would worry about them getting nails caught in the mesh but with the rigid one, how do the turtles get out?
I used to use a netting cover for a fish pond to keep the fish IN - crazy spawning behavior in comets - and it worked well, but I no longer use it as the turtles get in and out each day and they would get tangled in it.

I don't think if you used a rigid one (like hardware cloth) right over the pond/stock tank you'd be planning on the turtles getting out. (I did this last summer with stock tanks.) You could, however, fence in an area around the pond with it and use some of it to create a cover over the area (connected to the fence), which would protect the turtles and allow them to get out of the pond.

I have seen black vinyl hardware cloth before (Not sure about the $$$). For an in-ground pond, I think a fenced area would also be better.

For the hardware cloth, what are ways too attach it?

Attach it to what?

Like if you have a outdoor stock tank for a pond, the turts would have an easy escape if the hardware cloth was just placed on top on it.
