A tank stand is to put your tank on to raise it up.
It is important for your tank to be properly supported on the bottom. If the sides are hanging off the edge of what the tank is sitting on, the bottom could crack. You don't necessarily need a special tank stand, but whatever the tank is sitting on should completely support the bottom of the tank, and the weight of the water. Remember that 1 US gallon is about 8.35 lbs. So even a 30 gallon tank weighs about 250lbs!

looks better. its a piece furniture. you can put your supplies and cannister filters in the cabinets underneath. Also if you just have it on the floor cats/dogs other animals may mess with the tank. Some furniture may not be able to support your tank, depending on the weight and size with the water in it. It's probably a lot heavier than you think. I think it's an important thing for medium- large size fish tanks with water in them.

besides the whole equal balance.
if you have the tank higher, on a stand, then cleaning the tank with a siphon or python siphon will be so much easier
and the stands usually are a great place to keep turtle "stuff"
i.e. food, old boxes, spare lights, whatever!
